An Introduction:

Since 1996, ConcertOPERA, Philadelphia, (COPA) has performed mostly standard works featuring professional and emerging artists in intimate settings for an up close and personal approach to opera. This is a powerful experience for newcomers to the world of opera and an exciting appreciation of artists and their emotional intensity for those who already love opera. It is a unique setting for a new and different hearing of major works. COPA therefore proudly boasts “Singer friendly, Audience friendly.”

Mission Statement:

We believe in the power of opera performed in intimate settings. To that end, we produce performances in diverse locales throughout the Delaware Valley region. We provide a collaborative platform for emerging and established artists while presenting educational opportunities for our audiences through each production.

Concept:

It is our goal to nurture and support the next generation of opera professionals while bringing the finest artistic experience to a broader public.

ConcertOPERA is traditionally performed in the concert style which allows one to intimately experience the beauty and intricacies of the music and follow the story line in a simpler setting. While it is always exciting to experience the many facets of fully-staged performances of opera, we present a hybrid concert version with stage-directed action, light appropriate costuming, chamber orchestra and supertitiles.

We offer a chamber experience to our audiences, as we present in intimate theaters of maximum 350 seats. The proximity to the artists provides a unique experience not possible in larger theaters. Our motives are highly educational both for singer and for audiences. Our programs are informational and explanatory to afford ease of comprehension and enjoyment.

In addition, our audiences are very diverse. Because of the nature of our broad and varied locations of our members, we have attracted many of our audiences from the suburbs of Philadelphia and have testimonials of many who were able to see their first opera with ConcertOPERA. Some have become donors to our company, steadfast attendees each season, and have become season subscribers to other area opera companies.

Currently we present in four regional locations, the newest of which is Haddonfield United Methodist Church in Haddonfield, NJ. Last season we moved to Christ Church in Old City and Stage One in Wallingford and returned for the second visit to the International House in Center City, Philadelphia.

Four fairly new moves over the past three years evidence our audience appeal and growth and enhanced seating accommodations. All four newer venues seat 350-600 guests.

Summary:

ConcertOPERA, Philadelphia is a modest yet well-established world class opera company serving the Greater Philadelphia and Delaware Valley region with concert and chamber opera. COPA’s mission is to entertain, educate, and to reach a broader audience with the art form. We identify and engage young artists of professional potential and provide them a needed forum and an opportunity to work with more seasoned conductors and performers.

It is our goal to grow this season and beyond, but it is crucial to our mission to attain sponsors and funding.
